How to Start an Online Business in 2025: Complete Beginner's Roadmap

If you have been searching for ways to start your own online business, you are probably like me and have been worried that your retirement will not be enough to sustain you in the life you would like to live.

That was us - our small business closed in the covid years and we had to sell our beautiful home.  I was petrified because we were in our late 50's and all our security was gone in one fell swoop! We luckily could move to a rent free cottage on a remote farm, so our daily costs were very little, but we still needed to earn again.  I was now surrounded by the nature I had always dreamed of—but I had never felt more isolated or uncertain about the future.

I knew that earning income online was the key to the financial freedom I so desperately needed now. I dreamed of working from home, setting my own hours, and never having to endure long commutes. My vision was to carry on living on a farm, surrounded by nature and animals, free to create the life I truly wanted. I can't say that it didn't take years to figure out how I could earn online, as I went down multiple rabbit holes on - quick ways to earn online - but those "earn thousands in days online" are invariably scams. The sure and trusted way of earning online is to have your own online business which is suited to your knowledge or desires and not a "get rich quick" scheme.

One of the first things we did was set up WiFi. While my husband worked on the farm, I started researching ways to earn extra income online with my own business. I am so grateful that I didn't give up and I found a fantastic training that helped me set up own business. • Coaching & Consulting: If you have expertise in a particular area, you can coach or consult online.
• Remote Work: Many traditional jobs can now be done remotely—customer service, project management, tech support, etc.

2. E-Commerce (Selling Products Online)

• Drop Shipping: Sell products without holding inventory. You find customers and a supplier ships the product directly to them.
• Retail Arbitrage: Buy products at a discount and resell them for a profit.
• Private Labeling: Find a product, brand it as your own, and sell it at a markup.

3. Selling Digital Products

• E-books & Online Courses: Create and sell digital information products.
• Printables & Designs: If you’re creative, you can sell printables, digital planners, or artwork on platforms like Etsy.
• Stock Photography & Digital Assets: Sell photos, templates, or other digital assets online.

4. Affiliate Marketing

One of the easiest and beginner-friendly ways is affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is simply recommending a product or service and earning a commission when someone buys through your link. It’s no different from recommending a great book or movie to a friend—except in this case, you get paid for it. eg travel bookings (like Booking.com).

• No dealing with customers – Perfect if you’re an introvert like me.

You can become an affiliate for just about anything: online courses, software, products, hotels - almost anything has an affiliate program.

After exploring all the different ways to earn income online, I decided that affiliate marketing was the best fit for me. I didn’t want the stress of dealing with inventory, customer service, or exchanging my time for money. I wanted a business model that gave me true freedom—freedom to live where I wanted, work when I wanted, and earn an income without limits.
