Digital Nomad = Freedom Lifestyle
Do you dream of traveling the world, and even better, do you dream that you could travel the world while still earning money because you are not tied down to a 9-to-5 location-dependent job? There are options out there that could help you achieve those dreams and make them a reality. This is the dream I had, and I explored multiple avenues to find the right model for me to become location-independent.
Why become a digital nomad?
The most common reason that people want to become digital nomads is generally for the travel opportunities it gives them. That laptop lifestyle they've been craving.
Having your own online business gives you time, geographical location, and income freedom. Being a digital nomad allows you to combine travel and work. So you can work online from your laptop, as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection, while spending time exploring new cultures and environments.
All different age groups can become digital nomads. The most common age group is generally the 20s to 30s group, as they generally have fewer family responsibilities and can be more adaptable to work. However, older individuals can easily experience this way of life too. They could be empty nesters or want a complete career change. The opportunity might only now have become available for them to travel. They want to experience living the digital nomad type of life in their 50s and 60s and want to travel extensively while they feel energetic enough to do so.
Many digital nomads choose to live in countries that have a lower cost of living than at home. If they are earning in a strong currency, they can stretch their income further and enjoy a high quality of life. Some of the most popular places for digital nomads visa countries to stay right now are:
- Portugal

How To Be A Digital Nomad
So how can you become a digital nomad? Below, I set out different models, which is the first step in creating your own online business.
Starting with the easiest model to get involved in, which is affiliate marketing,.
Affiliate marketing is where you refer a visitor to your website to a product or service of another company and earn a slight commission when they buy from your link, at no extra cost to themselves. eg education, an app, booking.com.
Pro's: Simple, no need for your own product, total geographical freedom.
Con's:
Service Providers: If you have a skill or are qualified for a certain career, can you do that work remotely? You either freelance by offering your skills and expertise as a service, either for a monthly retainer or hourly fee. Bookkeeper, website designer, and writer. Or you can use your skills or expertise to become a coach.
Pros: Fast to get started. Choose your own clients and working hours. There is a lot of human interaction.
Con’s: Trading time for money and your income is dependent on the hours available.
Remote workers possess a job or career and still work for an employer, but it is not location-dependent.
E-com: Sell products online. Either physical products or digital.
- Physical: Private labelling is where you find a product, buy it, brand it, and sell it for more. Drop Shipping: finding a product, finding a buyer, the supplier then shipping it to the customer, and you make a slight income—a low-risk, low-start-up model. Retail arbitrage: find a product in demand, find a deal, buy bulk, and resell at a higher cost. Affiliate for a product or a market place where you find a product, say on Amazon, you post it on your website, and when you sell it to your customers, they pay you a commission.
- Info: These digital products are where you can sell them, like eBooks. Create an online course, and you can sell a digital copy of your course. Or affiliate marketing, where you sell an info product on your website and earn a commission when a customer buys directly from the marketplace. If you are creative and you create a design, you can sell it time and again on a site like Etsy. You can sell any digital product anywhere in the world, as there is nothing physical to send.
Pro's: Creative, build a website that can be sold.
Con's: Customer service
Affiliate marketing is the quickest and easiest model to get started with if you want your own online business. You do not need startup capital, stock, shipping, or exchanging time for money. This is the resource I chose, as I did not have to deal with customers, and it suited my introverted personality.
The company I joined taught me all the different models for starting an online business, but I chose affiliate marketing for myself.

How I Started On My Journey To Become A Digital Nomad
Ever since my 2 boys left home, I have been dreaming of traveling more. I wanted to build a business around some of the things that mattered most to me: travel and living the freedom lifestyle.
During the COVID years, my husband and I had to close our brick-and-mortar business, and we moved to a remote farm. I started looking at making an income online, as there was no possibility of a traditional job anymore. Working remotely has become a way of life for many, and I wanted that for myself too.
I started looking at how to earn money by working online. I had a basic understanding of how to do drop shipping, affiliate marketing, online surveys, print on demand, and produced a couple of low-content books. I made a few dollars here and there, but no matter how hard I worked or how much I spent on Google Ads, none of the ventures I tried actually worked.
I sank into depression in 2022 after 2 years of trying. I felt like a failure. I couldn't make it work, and my dream of having an online business earning dollars while I traveled was not looking like a possibility anymore. I got help and started to feel a bit better; however, I still felt worthless as I could not accomplish anything.
Luckily, I saw this guy, Mitch, on YouTube, he was living in Portugal and had a B&B as well as a few online businesses, and he talked about this company that could show me how to make it online. It wasn't a quick "make it in 6 weeks course". This company gives you a step-by-step plan on how to create your own online business, and if you need extra help, like a coach, you can also get that help. All the technical details are taken care of if you need technical help too, so no matter how old you are or technically challenged, this company can still help you, just like they did for me.
Now I have a sense of purpose again. I love helping others get their dream businesses up and running online too. I have two websites right now, one of which has to do with my passion for travel. I chose the affiliate marketing method through blogging. However, a travel blog isn’t the only option. Other examples include food bloggers, health bloggers, fashion bloggers, and lifestyle bloggers. Income from this method generally comes from advertising, affiliate marketing, or selling products. But first, you need to build an audience. I can now take my laptop wherever I go. I can visit my sons whenever I want, live between two farms, and can spend the rest of the time traveling. As long as I have internet, I can earn an income. This is living the digital nomad life. I am offering you the chance to watch these videos too, if this is the freedom lifestyle that you would love to live too. There's no better reward than helping people transform their lives with an online dream business.
